Ian MacFarlane-Bowman, President

London Scottish has a very long tradition of offering rugby at all levels and is very proud of the senior teams that play outside of the professional team.

After experiencing some difficult seasons in leagues of varying ability, London Scottish decided to change its strategy for its senior amateur rugby and to enter its strongest possible amateur team into the RFU league system.

By the regulations laid out by the RFU, this required London Scottish to cut its links with the new team. A difficult decision, but one required to improve the level of amateur rugby for up and coming young stars, ex-internationals looking to play at a reasonable level, and former local and national level club players still wishing to play the game.

Over the summer a new club, London Scottish Lions RFC, was formed. The team uses a variation of the London Scottish brand, licensed by the Pro Club, and will continue to play its home games at the Richmond Athletic Association Ground in Richmond, Surrey. It is, however, a separate club, with different executive officers, committee and financing.

In the first season (2018/19) there were two London Scottish Lions teams, the First XV who began in Herts Middlesex League 2, and a Second XV who went into Middlesex Merit Table Division 2, taking over where the London Scottish FC Extra Bs left off the year prior.

In addition, a Rampant Lions team was created to feature the best players from across the two senior playing groups, and play exhibition fixtures against the likes of the Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and elite academies of prominent club teams across the UK and beyond.

After a highly successful maiden season, which saw the First XV win their league with an unbeaten record (bonus-point victories in every game), and the Second XV finished runner-up to London New Zealand in MMT2, and won the play-off game against Old Streetonians. To finish a great year, the Lions won the Middlesex Shield too.

In 2019/20, the Lions will again field two teams:

  • London Scottish Lions First XV – Herts Middlesex League 1
  • London Scottish Lions Second XV – Middlesex Merit Table Division 1

Whether you are an ex-international, an aspiring young player or someone who likes to don the boots once a month, we have the set up for you to enjoy rugby. And no you don’t need to be Scottish!

We field two sides in competitive local leagues. We are always looking for new players to join our sides.
